Children's suitcases and functional travel trolleys for kids
When the youngest family members head out into the world, a dedicated children's suitcase provides a sense of ownership and travel joy. A well-designed suitcase for children must be able to withstand active play while traveling, while also easing the burden on parents during transport through airports and train stations. At Copenhagen Luggage, we select models from renowned manufacturers such as Samsonite, where uncompromising durability, ergonomics, and low weight are incorporated into every detail.
Traveling with children places special demands on luggage functionality. The suitcases must be able to handle everything from sudden drops and bumps to acting as a practical seat in a long queue. Our assortment includes both popular ride-on suitcases that the child can sit on and ride, as well as upright models with two wheels that make it easy for the child to pull their own belongings. When planning your next vacation, you will find durable travel solutions and suitcases for the whole family with us, making packing and travel days more manageable.
Choose the right children's suitcase as a ride-on or classic children's trolley
The choice of the optimal model depends primarily on your child's age, independence, and travel patterns. For the youngest children between three and seven years old, a so-called ride-on suitcase like the Samsonite Dream2Go is an ideal solution. This type combines luggage storage with entertainment and transport, as the molded seat allows the child to sit securely while an adult pulls the suitcase using the included strap. When fatigue sets in at the airport terminal, the suitcase is quickly transformed into a welcome resting spot.
For slightly older children who want full control over their own luggage, a classic children's trolley with two wheels is the obvious choice. These suitcases resemble traditional suitcases for adults in design but are sized for the child's height with adjusted telescopic handles and a lighter construction. This gives the school-aged child the pride of rolling their own gear without straining their back and shoulders.
Checklist for choosing a suitcase for children
- Child's age and mobility: Choose a ride-on suitcase like the Samsonite Dream2Go for three to seven-year-olds, or an upright children's trolley for older children.
- Durable materials: Choose robust shells in molded polypropylene or durable textiles that can withstand active play and travel use.
- Wheels and strap: Integrated wheels and a solid strap make it easy for the child to roll themselves or be pulled when their legs get tired.
- Carry-on rules: Check the suitcase's external dimensions against your airline's specific cabin requirements before departure.
Features that facilitate transport during travel
When comparing suitcases for children, you should pay particular attention to the stability of the wheels and the design of the handle. Models in the Samsonite Dream2Go ride-on suitcase category are equipped with recessed, durable wheels and a solid anchor point for the strap, ensuring stability even when the suitcase is pulled at a brisk pace over uneven surfaces.
Inside, a functional children's suitcase should have simple and clear storage. Cross-straps at the bottom prevent clothes, toys, and books from sliding around when the suitcase is opened and closed. This way, the child learns early on to keep their things organized, whether the trip is for a weekend at the grandparents' or longer trips abroad.
Children's suitcases as carry-on for family air travel
A major advantage of modern suitcases for children is that they are generally dimensioned to comply with the general framework for carry-on luggage with most scheduled airlines. This means that the child can have their favorite things, an extra sweater, and entertainment right at hand during the entire flight, while you avoid the risk of lost luggage.
Although many children's suitcases stay within the standardized framework for cabin baggage, the requirements for size and weight vary significantly between individual airlines. If you would like deeper insight into the rules for cabin sizes, you can read more in our guide on cabin suitcases. We always recommend that you check your specific airline's current baggage rules before departure, as permitted dimensions for carry-on luggage can be updated regularly.
Durable materials created for children's travel adventures
A children's suitcase is subjected to significantly harder stress than regular adult luggage. When a child sits on a suitcase or pulls it over curbs, it requires a shell with extreme fracture strength and high flexibility. For hard-shell models, molded polypropylene, often abbreviated to PP, is therefore used. Polypropylene is a superior material for this purpose because it absorbs shocks and springs back into shape without cracking, even if the suitcase is dropped or pressed hard.
At Copenhagen Luggage, we generally do not sell suitcases made of ABS plastic. ABS is the cheapest plastic material for suitcases on the market, but it lacks flexibility and cracks easily during standard airport handling or upon impact, often already on the very first trip. In more than 95 percent of cases, a cracked ABS suitcase can neither be repaired nor serviced. Therefore, we rely exclusively on molded polypropylene for our hard-shell children's models to ensure a suitcase that lasts for several years of travel activity.
In our selection of soft suitcases and bags for children, including the Samsonite Happy Sammies Eco, durable textiles woven from recycled polyester are used. This material provides a soft and tactile surface with applications that appeal to younger children, while the fabric provides high resistance to wear and tears on everyday outings.
Frequently asked questions about children's suitcases
Which children's suitcases can you sit on?
Ride-on suitcases, such as the Samsonite Dream2Go, are specifically designed in molded polypropylene so that children aged three to seven can safely sit on them, push themselves along with their feet, or be pulled by an adult using the integrated pull strap.
Which size children's suitcase is right for my child's age?
For smaller children aged three to seven, a ride-on suitcase is recommended, as it combines luggage space with fun transport and a place to rest. For school-aged children, an upright two-wheeled children's trolley is more suitable, as it features a taller telescopic handle and more traditional packing volume.
Can a children's suitcase be brought as carry-on luggage?
Most children's suitcases are designed to comply with standard cabin dimensions, allowing them to be taken on board the aircraft. However, since luggage rules and permitted dimensions vary from airline to airline, you should always check your specific airline's regulations before departure.
